Sun, 22 May 2011 14:36:00 -0700 Don't let the weather keep you and your camera inside. http://blog.albertellenich.com/dont-let-the-weather-keep-you-and-your-camera http://blog.albertellenich.com/dont-let-the-weather-keep-you-and-your-camera

It's easy to let weather make you think you can't go outside to shoot. I'll be the first to admit I'm a fair weather photographer, but when I look at my portfolio, I realize that I often go out to shoot because of less than ideal weather. Perspective changes everything about photography.

Since my birthday falls late in May, springtime weather is often too unpredictable to plan an outdoor event to celebrate. One thing I do enjoy, is taking a stroll with my camera through the Chicago Botanic Gardens. Even if it rains, there are many opportunities to get some photos both indoors and out.

What do you do when the skies are gray and it looks like rain?

  • Head to a garden where floral colors pop much brighter under gray skies.
  • Take rain protection for you and your camera.
  • Take advantage of breaks between sprinkles to catch photos with newly fallen raindrops.
  • Look for indoor exhibits or covered areas that may be hiding photographic opportunities.
  • Watch for subjects that are much closer to you, in some cases right in front of you so that you can provide some shelter from rain sprinkles while you shoot a few frames.
  • Enjoy the fun of shooting and trying to find great shots now that you're out.
  • Don't strive for perfection in every shot. If rain is off and on, shoot when you can keep your camera dry and have fun.

Sun, 06 Mar 2011 12:54:27 -0800 Get great people shots in bright sunlight. http://blog.albertellenich.com/get-great-people-shots-in-bright-sunlight http://blog.albertellenich.com/get-great-people-shots-in-bright-sunlight

I had the pleasure of photographing a lovely young woman named Lilita recently. She wanted photos to celebrate her upcoming birthday, which was not a milestone birthday in the traditional sense as it was an odd number between 2 decades. We met on a Sunday morning, the day before her actual birthday.

Schedules dictated an 8am meeting for our photo shoot. Lilita’s preference for a location happened to be a beachfront I frequented often with my dog when I lived in the same neighborhood many years ago. I knew we were off to a great start because I had many great memories there and an earlier introduction to Lilita proved her to be very personable and approachable.

Morning and late evening sun are typically great times of day for photography, but this morning sun caused unique problems. The sky was clear, the sun was bright and there was lots of white snow on the ground. This caused challenges with squinting and shadow, but they could be overcome with a few handy tricks:

  • A trick to photograph someone in light that makes them squint.
Ask the person to close their eyes and open them on your count. Be prepared to catch multiple shots. There will certainly be a few funny expressions in your final photos, but you should also catch a couple that are natural and squint-free.
  • Use a flash with bright sunlight for a warm glow.
That’s right. Use a flash in bright sunlight. Position the sun so it’s not in your subject’s eyes and use a fill flash to light their face. Get creative and position the sun directly behind their head to give a summer glow around their hair and use the flash to fill in the face. Be creative and find ways to work with the situation you have.
  • Talk with your subject to release expressions and sideways looks that can’t be posed, and avoid sun squints naturally.
I find that talking with my subjects makes us both feel more natural. Many people don’t like to be in front of a camera for lots of different reasons. As a photographer, I have reasons for feeling self conscious behind the camera. Talking with my subject relaxes both of us and allows me to capture expressions that can’t be posed. These often lead to sideways glances, body and head positions that come naturally to people rather than being asked to pose and look at the camera a certain way. There’s no better way to help a person’s natural personality come through!

What tips or tricks do you use when you have to work with bright sunlight when photographing people?

I'm really excited to have a brand new site launched with new galleries and a focus on my photography and social media consulting for artists. I've also decided to feature one of my photos in a FREE monthly calendar you can download each month.

This was a project that became very big once I got started. Even the best planned projects need to have room for growth and improvement along the way!

Sat, 19 Feb 2011 21:43:00 -0800 Urban Pooch Playtime! http://blog.albertellenich.com/urban-pooch-playtime http://blog.albertellenich.com/urban-pooch-playtime

Friends of mine recently opened a new canine life center in Chicago offering a fantastic assortment of products and services for the urban pooch. I'm honored and very excited to be working with them to showcase some of my pet photography in their store and on their website at http://www.urbanpooch.com.

I visited them today to take advantage of a very full playroom. The dogs were having a great time and I scampered all over the place to try and catch them with my camera. These are some of my favorite shots from the day.
